Flood victims to be provided with rent allowance: DC

Kodagu Deputy Commissioner P I Sreevidya said that the flood victims will be provided with a rent allowance of Rs 10,000 per month till their rehabilitation.

Urging for rehabilitation to be provided to the flood-affected at Maitri Hall in Madikeri, the victims at the relief centre submitted a memorandum to the DC on Tuesday.

The victims said that they should be allowed to stay at the centre on humanitarian grounds till rehabilitation measures are taken up. Around 50 victims led by Harish Acharya met the DC.

Speaking on the occasion, Harish Acharya said that the flood victims should not be vacated from the relief
centre.

“Necessary requirements like food, clothing and medical aid should not be discontinued. A few victims who have lost their houses in the floods did not manage to get houses for rent and they have no other place to stay,” he added.

The DC promised that the flood victims will not be vacated from the relief centre. At the same time, the district administration will work towards providing rehabilitation to the flood-affected victims, she added.

Madikeri tahsildar Kusuma visited Maitri relief centre on Tuesday and inspected the facilities including food grains and cooking gas.

She directed the officials to provide only good quality food to the inmates of the relief centre.

“The flood victims at the relief centre are not willing to leave it. Therefore, the time to shift to the rented houses has been extended. A few labourers who were residing in line houses of coffee plantations are staying in the relief centre and they do not own any documents. The same will be brought to the notice of the deputy commissioner,” said the tahsildar.
