Gandhi Mantapa cries for attention

Last Updated 05 August 2018, 18:01 IST

Lack of maintenance has affected the Gandhi Mantapa in Madikeri.

The Gandhi Mantapa was constructed to remember Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to Kodagu district in 1934. He had addressed a mammoth gathering from the place where the Mantapa has come up.

Continuous rainfall in the last two months has affected the surroundings of Gandhi Mantapa. The roof of the Mantapa has developed cracks and water seeps inside.

The rods are rusted and weeds have grown around the Mantapa.

Polythene waste and liquor bottles dumped haphazardly around the Mantapa welcome visitors.

Arun Kumar, a resident, said, “The civic workers should clean the surroundings of the Mantapa at least once in a week.”

The lights in the surroundings of the Mantapa are defunct. A few streetlights have been stolen.

The dangling wires from electricity poles near the school and college premises pose a threat to walkers near the Gandhi Mantapa.

Residents have urged the authorities to maintain Gandhi Mantapa and also instal CCTV at Gandhi Mantapa.

A ground in front of the Mantapa has turned into a slushy field. The ground is used by students from St Michael School for playing.
