He tried to destroy evidence
Last Updated 26 January 2012, 19:52 IST

Rahul Verma, a first-year MBA student at Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow had planned the murder of his Mumbai- based fashion designer-friend Adesh Bajpai meticulously. Had the CBI not got into the picture, he just might have got away with it.

The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested Rahul on Wednesday night, shocking his IIM classmates.
According to the CBI, Rahul killed Adesh at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur campus in August 2010, stuffed the body in a gunny bag and then dumped it in the bushes. Rahul, who was then a student at IIT-Kanpur, tried his best to destroy evidence. He had allegedly poured acid on the body so that it could not be identified.

Adesh’s body was recovered from the IIT Kanpur campus 13 days after the murder, and identified after a DNA examination.

The initial investigation by the Uttar Pradesh police did not make much headway, allegedly owing to their indifferent attitude. It was alleged that a close relative of Rahul was a senior police official in the state and hence, the police did not take much interest in the matter. Adesh's father later moved High Court, which ordered a CBI probe in the case. The motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, sources said. Rahul has been sent to CBI custody by a court and is being quizzed by the sleuths.
His family members claim that he is innocent.
