Thirteen members of a social organisation for women were arrested today for demonstrating near the residence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to protest the gang-rape and killing of a girl student at Barasat.

Condemning Saturday's gang-rape and murder at Barasat in neighbouring 24 Parganas district, members of 'Nari Maitree' organisation, held placards demanding that the chief minister act immediately to ensure safety and security of women in the state.

"It is the responsibility of the CM to restore law and order in the state and ensure safety and security of women in the state," the demonstrators said.

'Nari Maitree', registered under NGO Affairs Bureau and Department of Women was founded in 1983 with a mission to empower the disadvantaged poor and vulnerable women.

The arrests were made from near Hazra crossing in South Kolkata where the chief minister's residence is located, police sources said.
