Twenty-three Tamil Nadu fishermen, arrested by Sri Lankan Navy six days ago while fishing near Katchatheevu in the Palk Strait, have been released and will return home soon.

The Indian high commission is making all arrangements for their return, Krishna said at a joint press interaction with his Indonesian counterpart Marty M. Natalegawa here.

The fishermen are expected to reach Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu later Friday or Saturday.
The release came a day after Krishna intervened on the issue and appealed to Colombo to set free the fishermen on humanitarian grounds.

In the aftermath of the arrests, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had hit out at the "unrelenting, harsh attitude of the Sri Lankan Navy" towards Indian fishermen.
