The CBI on Monday won a conviction in the Aarushi Talwar-Hemraj Banjade double murder case, but investigation into the case saw many twists and turns over the last five years.

.
At one stage in 2010, the CBI itself had filed a closure report in the trial court saying that it did not have evidence against Aarushi’s dentist parents - Rajesh and Nupur. Had it not been for a special court’s direction to put the teenager’s parents to trial for her murder, the outcome in the case would have been very different from the conviction of the Talwars.

Aarushi and servant Hemraj were found killed inside the 14-year-old’s house in Noida’s Jalvayu Vihar on the night of May 15–16, 2008. When Aarushi’s body was discovered on May 16, ‘then believed to be missing‘ Hemraj was considered as the main suspect.

However, the first twist came when Hemraj’s body was found on the terrace next day.

According to post-mortem reports, Aarushi and Hemraj died between 12 am and 1 am. They had been attacked with a heavy blunt weapon, which caused a ‘U/V-shaped’ scar and resulted in their death. Their throats were also slit with a sharp weapon.

Initially, the Uttar Pradesh Police were criticised for botching up investigation by failing to secure the crime scene.

On May 23, 2008, they claimed Aarushi’s parents -- Dr Rajesh and Dr Nupur Talwar -- were the main suspects.

In a press conference, it was claimed that Rajesh murdered Aarushi and Hemraj after learning about a sexual relationship between them, or that Rajesh had hit Aarushi fatally after she confronted him about his alleged extra-marital affair while Hemraj was killed as he was a witness to Aarushi’s death.

Rajesh was arrested on the same day and sent to Dasna Jail in Ghaziabad. The accusations enraged the Talwars’ family and friends, who alleged that the police were trying to frame them in a bid to cover up its own incompetence. On May 31, 2008, the case was transferred from the Uttar Pradesh Police to the CBI. In a fresh twist, the CBI’s suspicion moved to Krishna, an assistant at the Talwars’ clinic, and two other domestic servants Rajkumar and Vijay.

According to the CBI, Krishna, Rajkumar and Vijay were let in the house by Hemraj. Krishna also held a grudge against Rajesh, who had reprimanded him for an occupational mistake.

Investigators suspected that the three men tried to sexually assault Aarushi and killed her when she resisted.
