Bomb threats to flights: Hoax callers may end up paying penalty up to Rs 1 crore

New Delhi: Hoax bomb threats to obstruct flights will now invite a fine of up to Rs. 1 crore, according to the amended Aircraft Security Rules that were notified by the Central government on Sunday.

The decision comes days after a series of hoax calls and bomb threats disrupted hundreds of commercial flights across the country this year leading to massive congestion at airports and losses to fliers.

The changes in the Aircraft (Security) Rules, 2023 notified by the Civil Aviation Ministry have made communication of false information to “jeopardize the safety and security of an aircraft and aerodrome or civil aviation facility or both” a punishable offense.

Causing panic among passengers, crew ground personnel, or the general public; or disrupting the civil aviation operation will also invite action under the same provisions.

Section 29A of the Aircraft Security Rules too has been changed with an insertion of a clause that will empower the Director General of Civil Aviation to issue directions to refuse admission to an individual or a group in the aircraft or to leave the aircraft.
