The government on Wednesday gave a big boost to a much-delayed project for creation of a multi-modal transport route linking ports in eastern parts of the country with north-eastern states through Myanmar.

A meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi revised the cost estimate for the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project in Myanmar to Rs 2,904.04 crore. The erstwhile government headed by Manmohan Singh had approved the project in 2008 at an estimated cost of Rs 535.91 crore.

The Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project is aimed at linking Sittwe Port in Myanmar with Paletwa near Myanmar’s border with India through an inland waterway route and building a road between Paletwa and Lawngtlai in Mizoram in north-eastern India.
