Exams Highlights: Uttarakhand cancels Class 12 state board exams in view of Covid situation

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Friday wrote to the Union Education Minister suggesting that the result for class 12 students, whose exams were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, should be tabulated taking into account the marks scored during class 10, 11 and pre-board exams.

The Centre had on June 1 cancelled the CBSE class 12 board exams amid the continuing Covid-19 pandemic across the country and decided that the CBSE will take steps to compile the results according to a well-defined objective criteria in a time-bound manner. ( PTI )

. Students of classes 9 and 11 whose final could not be completed in view of the second wave of COVID-19 in Delhi will be promoted on the basis of marks obtained in the mid-term examination, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced on Thursday.

"While students of Class 8 were promoted without any hassle due to the no-detention policy, roadblocks in the promotion of students of classes 9 and 11 needed to be reduced. Annual examinations of classes 9 and 11, which were supposed to be conducted from April 12 onwards, were cancelled by the Delhi Government, keeping in mind the safety and security of students," Sisodia, who is also the education minister, said at a press conference.

Insisting that admissions to various courses including medical in Tamil Nadu be allowed based on marks in the higher secondary examination for this year in view of Covid-19, the opposition AIADMK on Thursday again urged the Centre to exempt the state from common entrance examinations including NEET.

. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has decided to commence interviews for civil services examination 2020, which were deferred due to a surge in Covid-19 cases, from August 2, according to an official statement.

The civil services examination is conducted annually by the UPSC in three stages -- preliminary, main and personality test (interview) -- to select officers of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), among others.

. Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday said all pending board examinations for Classes 11 and 12 in the union territory have been cancelled in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. (PTI)

. The NSUI on Monday demanded for age relaxation and extra attempts for students appearing in competitiveexamsin wake of the unforeseen delays in examination schedules due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a letter to Union Minister Jitendra Singh, NSUI national president Neeraj Kundan also demanded that vaccinating all students scheduled to appear for upcoming competitive examinations be made a priority. (PTI)

. The Centre has told the Supreme Court that it will take a final decision on the issue of conducting or cancelling class XII CBSE, ICSE Board exam in two days and has sought time till Thursday to place its decision before the court.

The top court has adjourned the case to Thursday, observing that a similar situation last year prompted internal marking instead. ( ANI )

. With students of class 12 restlessly awaiting the decision on conducting board exams, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to have a “nationwide policy” for the examinations.

. Industry chamber Ficci has written to the central government to cancel Class XII Board examinations, cautioning that the current situation due to Covid-19 is not conducive for conducting physical examination.

. The UP Secondary Education Council on Saturday cancelled board examinations for class 10 in view of the COVID-19 pandemic and proposed to take a 90-minute test of each subject for class 12 in the second week of July, if possible.

The detailed examinations scheduled for class 12 board examinations will be announced soon, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma said.

In an official statement, he said the council's decision to cancel class 10 examinations would benefit over 29.94 lakh students, allowing their promotion to the next class.

. "The CISCE is in the process of collating and collecting data from all our schools presenting candidates for class 12 examination. You are, therefore, requested to provide the requested information for class 12 candidates," CISCE Secretary Gerry Arathoon said in a letter to school principals marked as "strictly confidential".

. The CBSE had proposed two options -- conducting regular exams for only major subjects at notified centres or holding shorter-duration exams at the school where a student is enrolled.

The proposed timeline for conducting the exams was between July 15 to August 26 and declaring the results in September. States were asked to submit detailed suggestions by May 25.

Majority states opted for the second option which included conducting 90 minutes exams for major subjects at student's home schools. Few states also insisted on vaccinating students before going ahead with the exams.

. Keeping in mind the Covid-19 situation, the CBSE and CISCE are contemplating various options about the pending class 12 board exams, including cancellation and adopting alternative assessment route or going ahead with the exams in truncated format, according to sources.

"While majority states have favoured the option proposed by the CBSE about shorter duration exams for major subjects in August, the COVID-19 situation is still being reviewed and cancellation of exams and marking students on basis of previous exams is still an option," a source said.

Meanwhile, the CICSE board has asked its affiliated schools to submit average of marks obtained by class 12 students in class 11 and during this session. While there is no clarity from board whether the exercise hints at possible cancellation of exams, schools have already started working to meet the June 7 deadline set by the board.

. The Goa education board, which cancelled its Class 10 final exams this year, has formulated a scheme for finalising the results of students based on their internal assessment conducted by schools during the academic year and an objective criterion developed by the board.

The Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education's (GBSHSE) executive committee met on Saturday and prepared the scheme, which will have to be followed by all the schools affiliated to it.

The scheme's draft lays down several checks and balances, including de-recognition or penalty for a school if it is found indulging in malpractices while finalising the results of Class 10 students.

. The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) staged a protest at the Ministry of Education on Friday demanding the cancellation of class 12 board examinations in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The student wing of the Congress party said in a statement that the protesters wore PPE kits and followed Covid protocols while raising the slogan "'pehle suraksha, phir pariksha' (first safety, then exams)". (PTI)

The West Bengal government announced that it would hold board exams for class 12 in the last week of July, and class 10 (or Madhyamik) exams in the second week of August this year, according to multiple reports. The exams — which will be held only for main subjects — will be 90 minutes long feature short-type answer questions.

. Telangana govt on Thursday announced that it will hold state Class 12 exams in mid-July. Taking suggestions from a Central meeting, government said theexam will be only for 90 minutes and the students will only answer 50 per cent of the Question Paper. The decisions come in the light of widespread threat of Covid-19.

. The Andhra Pradesh government on Thursday said it was postponing the year-end examinations of Class X, scheduled to be conducted from the first week of June.

The government informed this to the High Court that was hearing a petition filed by some parents seeking cancellation of the Class X examinations in view of the virulent spread of coronavirus.

.Union Health Ministry is reportedly open to the idea of having the same schools as exam centres for Class 12. However, there was no official communication and final decision on the matter will be taken on June 1.
