Centre aims to make India hub for battery manufacuring

With the union cabinet approving the " National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage", the Centre aims to make India as a hub for manufacturing of batteries.

"The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the National Mission on Transformative Mobility and Battery Storage.T he Mission will have an Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee chaired by CEO, NITI Aayog to promote clean, connected, shared, sustainable and holistic mobility initiatives.

The Mission will also launch the Phased Manufacturing Programmes (PMP) for Batteries and for Electric Vehicle components, IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters said.

According to the scheme, the government will encourage companies to produce batteries. At present China, Japan, South Korea and Thailand are leaders in making batteries, the Minister said.

The scheme will finalise and implement strategies for transformative mobility and Phased Manufacturing Programmes for EVs, EV Components and Batteries.

The Mission will finalise the details of PMP for Electric Vehicle ecosystem and drive its implementation. The details of the value addition that can be achieved with each phase of localisation will be finalised by the Mission with a clear ‘Make in India’ strategy for EV components as well as battery technologies, he said.

The Mission will also coordinate with key stakeholders in Ministries/ Departments and the states to integrate various initiatives to transform mobility in India. The actions in this regard will benefit all citizens as the aim is to promote ‘Ease of Living’ and enhance the quality of life of our citizens and also provide employment opportunities through ‘Make-in-India’ he said.
