Mercury levels in the City dipped to four degree Celsius — the lowest this season — on Tuesday. The temperature dropped by 1.5 degrees from 5.5°C on Monday.
The maximum temperature recorded on Monday stood at 13.3°C. The city was enveloped by dense fog in the morning, with the condition improving post noon. However, people were seen wearing caps and mufflers even during the afternoon.
The Met department forecast “clear skies with mist or fog” on Wednesday morning. “The maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 16 and five degree Celsius respectively,” said a Met official.
The temperature will remain similar during the next two days, added an official. “Dense fog with visibility of 50 metre or less is likely to occur in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and other places during the next three days with cold day conditions.”
The coldest day in five years was recorded on December 25, 2011, when the minimum temperature dropped to 2.9°C.
In the past years, the coldest day was recorded in December 2005 when the mercury recorded 3.3°C, while the maximum temperature was recorded at 28.4°C in December 2003.
