The latest flashpoint in Indian politics has been the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner with incumbent Rajiv Kumar demitting office today. A panel chaired by PM Modi has chosen and appointed Gyanesh Kumar as CEC. Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, however, opposed the move keeping in mind a hearing was coming up in the Supreme Court on Feb 19 regarding the appointment of CECs and ECs. While the CEC was appointed based on seniority to date, a Modi govt legislation has okayed for a CEC to be appointed by the panel.
