India starts relief operation in quake-hit Afghanistan

New Delhi: India swung into action and started relief operations a day after a strong earthquake killed nearly 800 people and injured over 2,500 in eastern Afghanistan.

“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to the earthquake in Afghanistan. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families in this difficult hour, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X on Monday. “India stands ready to provide all possible humanitarian aid and relief to those affected.”

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke to the Foreign Minister of the Taliban Government in Kabul, Amir Khan Muttaqi, and assured him that India stood by Afghanistan at this difficult time.

Jaishankar conveyed to Muttaqi that India had delivered 1000 family tents today in Kabul. Besides, 15 tonnes of food material were also being immediately moved by the New Delhi’s mission in Kabul to Kunar in eastern Afghanistan.

“Further relief material will be sent from India starting tomorrow (Tuesday),” Jaishankar posted on X, wishing early recovery of those injured.

New Delhi has not yet formally recognised the so-called government that the Taliban set up after returning to power in Kabul on August 15, 2021, but has stepped up engagement with it.
