India to witness 'hotter than usual' temperatures from April to June: IMD

IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra also warned that landslides could occur in parts of Kerala and Karnataka in the Western Ghats and that northeastern states might face flooding in April.

India is likely to witness hotter-than-usual temperatures from April to June due to more heatwave days in central and eastern parts and the northwestern plains, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

“In 2025 from April to June, most parts of the country will witness above-normal maximum temperatures, except some parts of west peninsular India and isolated regions of east-central and east India where maximum temperatures are most likely normal,” said the IMD in its bulletin.

Even maximum temperature is also likely to be above normal in
most parts of the country, except some parts of extreme south peninsular India and northwest India, where maximum temperatures are most likely to be normal.

"Most parts of north and east India, central India, and the plains of northwest India are expected to experience two to four more heatwave days than normal," IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

He also warned that landslides could occur in parts of Kerala and Karnataka in the Western Ghats and that northeastern states might face flooding in April. Heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places over coastal & south interior Karnataka on April 3 & April 4.

Thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (speed 30-60 kmph) likely over Coastal Karnataka, during March 31 to April 4, and hailstorm is likely in north interior Karnataka during April 1-April 3 and south Interior Karnataka on April 3.

States likely to see above-normal heatwave days include Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and the northern parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Last week, the central government asked states to check if their hospitals were ready to handle heatstroke and heat-related illnesses amid a rise in temperatures. Last year, the all-India peak electricity demand crossed 250 gigawatts on May 30 - 6.3 per cent higher than projections.
