Responding to last week’s phone-in programme, Superintendent of Police Dr M Sanjeev Patil said that a total of 1,250 cases have been booked in the district in the last one week.

He was speaking at a phone-in programme in his office on Saturday. In the last one week, 31 matka, five gambling, 865 helmetless riding, 295 harsh horns in private buses, 52 drunken driving d two illicit liquor cases have been booked, he added.

To a complaint on students travelling on footboards of buses on Brahmavar-Barkur-Kokkarne areas, the SP said that the issue will be raised in the RTA meeting on September 1.

In the safety of students and public, the bus drivers will be told to close the doors, Patil said. On parking of autorickshaws near petrol bunk in Karkala where three roads join, the SP said he will initiate action shortly.

On account of holiday and Ganesha Chaturthi, the SP received only six calls from the general public.

Patil told reporters later that drug abuse cases are increasing in the district. If the public inform the police on those who sell drugs and are engaged in consumption of drugs, action will be initiated immediately. The police have already held first round of talks with the Manipal University authorities. Cases will be filed against drug addicts, he noted.
