The skulls were found during excavation by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums that was undertaken after the last find.

As many as 20 skulls were found in the village on August 28 last year. More than 100 skulls were unearthed during subsequent excavations on August 31.

The latest excavations have been carried out next to the spot where skulls were unearthed last year. The excavation has been taken up by a team led by Dr Gopal, Director of Archaeology and Museums, under the guidance of Dr M S Krishnamurthy, archaeologist with the University of Mysore.

Pampa’s birthplace

Besides the skulls, Annigeri has been in news for the controversy over a recent resolution passed by the Kannada Sahitya Sammelana. The resolution seeks to  shift the venue of the presentation of the annual Pampa award  from Banavasi to Annigeri.

Annigeri is the birthplace of Pampa, considered to be the father of Kannada poetry.
