<div>The University of Mysore (UoM) Academic Council on Wednesday decided to take action against two prominent colleges in the city for violating the norms of the varsity.<br /><br />St Philomena’s College has admitted a girl student, a BBM graduate for MA in English course against the norms. Teresian College has introduced a new combination without obtaining prior consent from the varsity.<br /><br />Vice-Chancellor Prof K S Rangappa, who presided over the meeting, said, “As per norms, both BBM and B Com graduates are not eligible to pursue MA in English. Even though the Philomena’s introduced the course in August 2014 and provided admission to a student, the college brought it to the notice of the UoM recently on January 28, 2016.” <br /><br />Rangappa directed the authorities to serve a notice on college management in this regard, while approving the admission of the student only in the particular case, considering her future.<br /><br />University of Mysore Registrar C Basavaraju said, colleges including, autonomous institutions, should follow the varsity norms in the process of admission.<br /><br />In his explanation, Philomena’s Principal M Krishnegowda, who was also present in the meeting, said the students of BCom, BBM, BA and BSc have common syllabus for the first three semesters. It is only during the fourth semester, there will be change in syllabus. The management students study Communicative English whereas BA and B Sc students study general English. The principal said that to give an opportunity for BCom and BBM students to take up MA in English, the Board of Studies (BOS) had recommended to admit students having 55 per cent aggregate marks in English language and by taking an additional paper in English offered by the college during the first year.<br /><br />Penalty<br />The vice-chancellor directed authorities concerned to impose ‘heavy penality’ on Teresian College, Mysuru for introducing a new combination violating the norms. The college had introduced a new combination in B Sc (Psychology, Family Resource Management and Human Development) without prior permission from the College Development Committee and UoM. Even the college has provided admissions for a few students.<br /><br />College Development Council Director Professor Lingaraja Gandhi said any autonomous or otherwise colleges should follow the UoM norms and colleges can introduce the subjects introduced at the university.<br /></div>
