Nurses and police operate at the cutting edge level of the profession as they deliver their jobs without compromise, said K Annamalai, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru south division.

He was speaking at the 29th Awards and Annual Day celebrations held at Dr T M A Pai Auditorium of Manipal College of Nursing, MAHE, Manipal.

Annamalai said calmness, patience and courage are qualities nurses need to cultivate during the crunch time all through their service. “Manipal is an energetic place and is considered to be the hub of education. No wonder, the Government of India has bestowed the ‘Institute of Eminence’ status to MAHE,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Saroja Jaykumar, AGM of Medical Services, Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru, said that the present-day students are technically sound and want to move fast. The budding nurses should challenge themselves, speak out, question and communicate.

“Be open to learning, take time to correlate what is learnt, put the learning into patient care, challenge every assumption, and be kind to everyone even amid the hurried tasks,” she said.

Presiding over the programme, Dr P L N G Rao, Pro Vice Chancellor (Quality Assurance), MAHE, Manipal, said that qualities like active listening, empathising and sympathising with patients, their relatives, and other professionals, are qualities of a nurse.

On the occaison, Annamalai inaugurated the Gerontological Nurses’ Association of India (GNAI), which is the first of its kind in the country. Also, MCON Research e-newsletter was released by Saroja Jaykumar.
