Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara on Thursday directed all educational institutes to constitute anti-drug committees in a week.

This came after he held a meeting with top police officials recently. He sought the education department to issue a circular in this regard.

He said the ragging incidents have come down only after setting up anti-ragging committees in education institutes. And hoped that the establishment of anti-drug committees would in the same way help to check drug abuse.

Parameshwara said he would discuss with the education department and heads of various educational institutes regarding the formation of the committee.

Starting August, an anti-drug campaign will be started across the state, he added.

Speaking about the facilities for the staff of the home department, he said he would hold a meeting the with the finance department to estimate the funds required to provide housing facilities and fresh recruitment.

“There is a shortage of staff. We also require funds to construct 11,000 houses. We have sought approval of the finance department for this,” he said.
