In its bid to rid the city of garbage, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has given Prahari vehicles to marshals to help them move places to catch offenders who litter on streets.

A BBMP order on Wednesday stated that the marshals have to constantly move from one place to another to catch the offenders.

“The marshals will have to catch offenders, who throw animal waste, domestic waste and industrial waste. As it involves constant movement, the BBMP will provide them with Prahari vehicles,” stated the letter.

Each zone will have one Prahari for marshals.

“We have an acute shortage of marshals right now. Ideally, there should be two marshals in each ward. The marshals appointed to monitor Bellandur Lake, quarries and Indira Canteens are now deputed for the job,” said Captain Rajbir Singh, senior officer, who is coordinating with marshals and the BBMP.

He also said the civic body had called a meeting to solve the issue and to appoint two marshals for each ward.

As of now, there are about 50 marshals looking after specific zones.

Sarfaraz Khan, joint commissioner, health and solid waste management, BBMP, said the marshals will now monitor all eight zones.

“Until now, we were monitoring Yelahanka, Mahadevapura and South zones. We have extended this to all wards,” said Khan.
