Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is planning an overhaul of the process to sanction trade licences, to make it more robust and prevent any foul play.
.
Going ahead, business owners will have to declare the zone in which they are starting a trade, the floor area of the establishment, the road width on which the trade is planned, and other such details while applying for a trade licence. The portal will further be trained to allow only certain types of business licences based on the entered information.
.
“There are 212 trades which are listed. Now, based on the area, zone, road width, and other details, the portal will allow applicants to choose only the types of business allowed in that particular zone for that particular road width. This way, we will be able to prevent them from applying for businesses they are not eligible for,” Suralkar Vikas Kishore, BBMP Special Commissioner (Health), told DH.
.
This will also help prevent corruption and make the process simpler for both BBMP and business owners, officials opined.
“Even if our officials collude with business owners and try to sanction them a licence, the portal will not allow it,” Kishore added.
.CM defends move to split BBMP for administrative convenience.
However, he noted that there is a possibility of people entering false details to obtain a licence. Hence, the BBMP has decided to take an undertaking from applicants at the time of application.
.
“They will have to take an undertaking that they have submitted the right details with respect to zone, road width and other things. If it is found to be false, the licence can be cancelled immediately,” he added.
.
The new process will also cut down processing time significantly, and a provisional trade licence will be issued as soon as the portal approves the application. However, a spot inspection will be carried out later, and if the details are found to be incorrect, the licence will be cancelled immediately, officials said.
.
Many residents hope the move will help curb illegal businesses, especially in residential areas.
.
“If the road width is less than 40 feet, it is considered a purely residential area and businesses should not be allowed. However, that is not the case most of the time. Big shops, restaurants open up even in smaller localities. We hope that this move by BBMP will curb such establishments,” said Sharada T, a resident of Indiranagar.
