Bengaluru vendor accuses businessman of kidnap; ‘civil dispute,’ say police

Bengaluru: A 47-year-old vegetable vendor has accused a businessman and his family of kidnapping and assaulting him over a financial disagreement.

The complainant, Sagai Raj, a resident of Koramangala, alleged that on February 12, while returning home on his bike, a gang of four men followed and attacked him.

He claimed they tied a cloth over his face, took him to an apartment, injected him to make him unconscious, and burnt his private parts with a cigarette butt.

Raj further stated that the men were taking him towards Bellandur to abandon him, but he managed to escape and sought help from the traffic police, who alerted the Koramangala police.

In his complaint, Raj named businessman Anand Kumar and his family as the main accused, alleging that they had hired four Telugu-speaking men to carry out the abduction.

He claimed he had helped Kumar secure a loan of Rs 20 lakh to sell his house and support his daughters’ education. When Kumar was unable to repay the amount, he allegedly orchestrated the kidnapping and warned Raj not to approach the police. 

A senior police officer said, “Based on the complaint, a case was registered against Anand Kumar and his family. However, our investigation found no evidence to support the allegations. It appears to be a civil dispute, and we are preparing to file a ‘B’ report in the case.”
