Bengaluru's Hosakerehalli flyover offers little relief, say commuters

Bengaluru: The Hosakerehalli flyover, near PES University, opened on November 12, 2025. Its construction began in August 2020 with an initial deadline of 15 months. The project was meant to ease traffic congestion but has failed to deliver the anticipated relief.

During peak hours, traffic clogs up the flyover heading towards Nayandahalli, commuters said. “The flyover has transferred the bottleneck from ground to flyover. There is no actual relief and a five year waiting period for nothing to change,” said Ramakanth, a commuter.

The entrance to the flyover towards Nayandahalli has also been left unfinished, with a 4-inch layer of asphalt that commuters complain about. Raju K, an auto driver, said, “Are they incapable of neatly finishing the project? Vehicle suspensions get damaged
due to this.”

The road below the flyover towards Hosakerehalli is currently closed by the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewage Board (BWSSB) for laying new pipes. Because of this, buses and other heavy vehicles are being diverted onto the flyover, further slowing down the rest of the traffic.

Anitha M, a garments worker and resident of Veerabhadranagar, said, “The buses go on the flyover and the Veerabhadranagar bus stop is closed because of this. Only some drivers stop near the entrance of the flyover for us to get down, which is risky, if they do not stop there we next have to get down near PES and walk almost two kilometers.”

The residents here have been put in an uncomfortable situation repeatedly by the authorities, she added.

The smooth flow of traffic towards Hosakerehalli lasts only till the Janata Bazar and Itmadu junction, where the traffic clogs for more than a kilometer — and gets even worse during peak hours, said shopowners at the Janata Bazar signal. “Including Hosakerehalli flyover there are two flyovers and one underpass before reaching Janata Bazar signal but still there is congestion here which proves that none of these are solutions. The government should focus on other means than building flyovers,” said a shopowner, wishing to remain anonymous.

A senior traffic cop confirmed that traffic congestion at Janata Bazar is an everyday occurrence. The traffic from Gorguntepaly reaches Janata Bazar without any signal in between; hence, the overflow of traffic causes the jam, he added.
