Bescom disconnects power supply to KSCA for non- compliance with fire safety norms

Bengaluru: Bescom, on Monday, disconnected the power supply to Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for failing to comply with the fire safety norms at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Earlier, the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services Department had written to the Bescom to take action against KSCA for failing to adhere to the fire safety protocols. Based on the letter, Bescom had issued a notice to KSCA.

“We had given them seven days' time to take measures. However, no adequate action was taken and hence the power supply was disconnected,” a senior Bescom official confirmed.

The High Court had also recently pulled up Bescom for continuing power supply to the stadium despite the flaws raised by the fire and emergency services department.

“We were assured that the measures will be put in place within a few days and hence we did not disconnect the power supply. However, when they failed to adhere to the norms even seven days after serving the notice, the power supply was disconnected,” the official added.

Bescom maintained that the power supply will not be restored till corrective measures were taken.

There has been an enhanced focus over the safety measures at the stadium after 11 people lost their lives in a stampede at the stadium during RCB’s victory celebrations.
