Analysing the growing demand for data scientists in the world market, the National Education Society (NES) has introduced a new BSc undergraduate programme on ‘Data Science’.

The management has also finalised the curriculum for the stream and got the permission to start the course from the academic year 2019-20.

The course will function under the Science department, where the NES has also come up with the lab at the National College, Jayanagar campus.

“Ten years down the line, there will be a huge demand for data. Due to lack of data storage, there are few innovations and practices that are not carried on for the next generation. So this particular subject aims to fulfil this need,” AH Ramrao, NES president told DH. “In the international market, there is a boom for data scientists. So without any delay, we will introduce the subject from next academic year,” Ramrao added.

This is an advanced version of data mining. The professionals use scientific methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge and insights from structured-unstructured and formal-informal data. They use the most powerful hardware, the most powerful programming systems, and the most efficient algorithms to solve problems.

Ramarao added: “The programme is designed to build the theoretical fundamentals in the area of Data Science. Besides data science, the students will study the Internet of Things (IoT) and Bio-medical Electronics. This will add value to the course. As the data scientists will store the sourced data online, the Internet of Things will be useful here and the Bio-medical Electronics in the health field.”

Expecting different job opportunities that would be created in India for Data Science graduates, Ramarao said: “Beside data scientists, they can be called as IoT Engineer, IoT App Developer, IoT Solution Architect and others.”
