Evening showers in parts of Bengaluru, more rain likely after 5 days of dry weather

Bengaluru: Parts of Bengaluru saw isolated rainfall from evening through late night on Tuesday. 

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Bengaluru city observatory recorded 2.8 mm of rain and HAL airport 3.1 mm till 11.30 pm. The Automated Weather Station (AWS) for Bengaluru Urban recorded 4 mm of rainfall during the same period. 

N Puviarasan, Head of Bengaluru Met Centre, said that the city would likely observe rainfall after four to five days of dry weather. 

He said that there will likely not be any large change in the maximum and minimum temperatures, adding that the maximum and minimum temperatures would be between 34°C and 21°C, respectively, for the next two days. 

He added that rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms will likely continue until monsoon in the month of June, as pre-monsoon rainfall is characteristically irregular.

He also said that gusty winds with wind speed 30-40 kmph and thunder and lightning are common in pre-monsoon showers. 

Vibha, a student travelling from MG Road to Indiranagar, got stuck in the rain and was unable to hitch a ride home on Rapido. 

“I had to pay a tip of Rs 30 to finally get a ride. The traffic was also pretty bad,” she said, adding that taking the metro would have been a better
option. 

Despite being almost negligible in terms of amount, this rainfall disrupted traffic movement in several parts of the city, including the Central Business District (CBD), southern and western Bengaluru. 

Clouds enveloped the city and temperatures fell on Tuesday evening, with several parts of northern, central and southeastern Bengaluru, including Hebbal, Lingarajapuram, Kalyan Nagar, Indiranagar, Cantonment area, BTM Layout, JP Nagar and Jayanagar seeing light drizzles. 

Kengeri, RR Nagar, Uttarahalli and Nayandahalli were some parts of southwestern Bengaluru that saw short spells of rain. Hosur Road, near Ayyappa Swamy temple junction, and parts of ORR also reported traffic snarls. 

Small rivers flowed down the sides of roads in the CBD, especially MG Road. Queen’s Circle near Tonique saw waterlogging on the sides of the road, slowing down traffic. Slow-moving traffic continued well past Basaveshwara Circle, with vehicles crawling on Raj Bhavan Road as usual.
