Theatre artiste and director Deepan Sivaraman will present his production ‘Khasakkinte Ithihasam’ (The Legends of Khasak) on May 7 and 8, 6 pm onwards, at Christ School (ICSE) Grounds, Christ School Road, Dharmaram College Post. ‘The Legends of Khasak’ is a bold and independent adaptation of O V Vijayan’s epic novel. The stage is set in an open-air arena, on a large rectangular pit of loose earth, with extensive use of fire, soil, water, scent, fog and sky.

.
The 205-minute spectacle recreates the imaginary rustic abode of the legendary land Khasak. The play brings back ancestors from the legend of Khasak with their community atmosphere in a ritualistic and philosophical plane to tell their tales of the celebration of life, earth and myths. The director also perfectly knits the dramatic elements of ‘theyyam’, an ancient ritual art form of worship in the Malabar and Dakshina Kannada areas. The play also makes use of puppets and masks with real and effective emotions that allows the audience to participate and experience the pleasures and tragedies that engulf ‘Khasak’.

‘Khasakkinte Itihasam’ has a special relevance in these times when subaltern realities are clashing with the made-up, varnished facades of promised glory that seek their identity in an era gone by. It forces us to look at a reality that existed but a few years ago, when we all lived together as human beings with religion and faith being understood and accepted as mere cosmetic differences. It speaks of a possibility of how multi-cultural, multi-dimensional realities can co-exist peacefully, in a symbiotic manner.

Deepan graduated from Central Saint Martin School of Art and Design, London, with a specialisation in scenography. During the last 2 decades of his theatre career, he worked on several productions as a director and scenographer. Some of the notable productions have travelled to festivals such as Edinburgh, Avignon and Almeda. He has won several national and international level recognitions including Charles Wallace India Trust Award and Kerala Sangitha Nadaka Academy Award.
