This image still drives young Ankita Chaudhry, who is a prominent designer among the current crop of young designers in the country. Based in Delhi, Ankita loves colours, cuts and designs. She sews Indian designs and embroideries into neatly cut Western outfits.

And she does this to perfection. You’d find a long dress with Indian motifs or a short dress drenched in colours of red, blue and yellow in her collection. In fact Ankita was wearing one of her creations during an event in the City — a spaghetti top lined with a
Banarasi border and dhoti pants. “I design for the Indian woman. I want them all to look bright and beautiful. I play around with colours and cuts. Mixing and matching different designs is what I like doing the most,” she said.

All her creations have a youthful energy to them. Ankita believes that “colours are the route and the portrayal of happiness”. Therefore, the essence of her label SAAJ is the playful, feminine and eclectic use of colours.

“SAAJ abbreviates into the names of all the members of my family. Just like the label, there is a personal touch to everything I do. Most of my creations are dedicated to the new age girl, the girl-next-door who is confident, responsible and beautiful. Girls wearing my creation will be sensitive to their roots but will not shy away from embracing the modern silhouettes of life,” reasons Ankita.

This young lady observes that fashion has its own interpretation in the different metros across the country. “Delhi is steeped in bling, Mumbai is a bit subdued and Bangalore is a neat mix of the two. It has a grandeur of its own. People here have a keen sense of dressing,” she adds.

Ankita feels Bangaloreans have been true to their culture in every sense of the term. After studying commerce in Shri Ram College of Commerce, Ankita moved to
National Institute of Fashion Technology in Delhi to polish her creative skills.

SAAJ was born thereafter and now the label has its presence in prominent cities across the world. Ankita is headed to Paris this September to showcase her work.

“It’s an honour that success has come to me so young. It’s a lot of hard work but every step foward is a challenge,” she sums up.
