Labourer dies of asphyxiation

A labourer died and three others took ill while working on a BWSSB project in Jagajeevanramnagar on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Kaku. The injuredAkhil (26), Ankit (24) and Maangu (25) were rushed to Kims Hospital for treatment and are said to be out of danger.

The BWSSB had taken up pipe jacking project using trenchless technology at Markandeshwarnagar in Jagajeevanramnagar near railway track.

10-foot-deep pit
The workers had dug a 10-foot deep pit when they encountered a boulder. They jumped into the pit to remove the boulder, without taking any safety measures.

Kaku who jumped into the pit first, collapsed and the rest fell unconscious due to asphyxiation. All of them were immediately lifted and rushed to the hospital, where Kaku was declared brought dead, said the police.

A case of negligence has been registered against BWSSB and the contractor.
