Memory Dialogue at IISc calls for dementia-friendly communities

Bengaluru: Dementia India Alliance (DIA), in collaboration with the Centre for Brain Research (CBR), Nightingales Medical Trust, and VayahVikas, recently hosted The Memory Dialogue: Science, Care & Community at the Centre for Brain Research, IISc Bengaluru.

The day-long event brought together more than 190 participants — including researchers, caregivers, healthcare professionals, students, and community members — to spotlight the urgent challenge of dementia in India and to share practical approaches to prevention, care, and community action.

It is estimated that 88 lakh people in India are currently living with dementia, a number projected to double by 2050. Awareness of the disease remains low, diagnosis is often delayed, and families frequently struggle to access the required support. The Memory Dialogue aimed to close the gap between science and society by providing the latest knowledge on prevention and care, while fostering dementia-friendly communities.

The programme opened with sessions on science and prevention, where Dr Jonas Sundarakumar and Dr Thomas Issac from CBR highlighted the importance of risk-factor management in early and midlife. They emphasised lifestyle choices such as regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and mental stimulation as powerful protective measures against dementia.

The care and support segment of the event featured experts and caregivers discussing early diagnosis, treatment, and community initiatives that enhance quality of life for people living with dementia. Participants also experienced the Brain Health Fair, receiving free memory screenings, lifestyle guidance, and specialised support resources for caregivers.
