Mercury plummets in Bengaluru, rain forecast over weekend

Bengaluru: Bengaluru has gotten perceptibly colder in the last 15 days, with the city registering a significant dip in temperatures. Although nights were expected to get cooler from December, temperatures have dipped in Bengaluru both in the daytime and at night. 

According to the data recorded by the India Meteorological department (IMD), the city recorded a minimum temperature of 16.7 degrees Celsius on Wednesday night, nearly 1.6 degrees Celsius lower than the mean minimum temperature for Bengaluru in November.

The maximum temperature - 26.6 degrees Celsius - too was 0.8 degrees Celsius lower than the mean value for November. 

‘Influence of Easterly Waves’

“The city has also received some rain over the past 15 days. Hence, the temperature has also remained lower than normal,” said C S Patil from IMD Bengaluru, attributing the climatic conditions in the city to the influence of Easterly Waves. 

“It is cyclone season now, and there are low pressure systems and cyclones. Consequently, the weather conditions are changing,” Patil told DH.

The city is also expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall over the weekend, resulting in a further drop in mercury levels. 

“The deep depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka coast has moved north-northwestwards and intensified into a cyclonic storm. As a result some parts of the city will receive moderate rainfall and many others will receive heavy rainfall over the weekend,” Patil noted.

Winter by first week of December

However, winter is expected to set in by the first week of December. The mean minimum temperature for December is 16.4 degrees Celsius and the mean value for maximum temperature is 26.9 degrees Celsius.
