Mistakes taught Harshika

Harshika Poonacha says the many ups and downs in her career have taught her a great deal

I started acting at the age of 15 and I believe that I have come a long way since. I never set out to make a career in the entertainment industry. But like they say, destiny has its own plans. There are many lessons that I have picked up along the way.

My first brush with the show business was when I landed in a summer job with a popular television house. I hosted a talk show called ‘Nimmindha Nimagaagi.’ It was at this time that the director of ‘PUC’ watched the show and liked my presentation. That day, after work, the director walked up to me and asked me if I wanted to act. I was stunned and told him that he needed to consult my parents. He then spoke to my father and that year, during my summer vacation, I completed my first film – ‘PUC’.

I vividly remember the first day of work — we were shooting in a scenic location amidst the lush greenery and waterfalls. I was ready with my hair, makeup and costume done. But as soon as I saw the waterfall, I ran and stood under it, without realising what I was doing. The director, cast and crew had to wait until I got ready again. It was an embarrassing moment because all I did was to unleash the child in me, without realising that I was actually at work.

Back in the days when I started, I nursed no fears and would do everything that the director asked me to. If I was asked to climb a hill, I would do so without a second thought. But today, I wouldn’t do that. I won’t risk anything until I am sure that all the safety measures are in place.

I am proud to say that I started my career without a godfather. I didn’t have anybody to guide or help me make the right decisions. I have made mistakes and learnt from them too. I have been independent right from the beginning and today I can say that I am a more confident person.

Over the years, I have a better judgement about what projects to choose and what costumes to pick. I have created an identity for myself which I am very proud of. People easily identify me with my characters.

I have also realised that it is hard to stand your ground in the film industry, but I have always believed in taking a path that is ethically right. I may have lost a lot of good projects along the way but I have no regrets.

Today, people respect me for who I am and know that they can’t take me for granted. I have set a benchmark for myself and don’t compromise on it come what may. I may not be as super busy as I used to be but I am happy and content with my pace and grateful for each passing day.
