Recyling notebooks in a novel way

Students, here's something to keep in mind on the last day of the exams.

If your notebooks have unused pages, don't keep them away in a cupboard or give them to a scrap dealer. Instead, you can donate them to make new books which will help both the environment and other students like you.

Youth for Seva, a non-profit organisation, will be collecting notebooks with unused pages from across the city and state. The unused pages will then be rebound and new notebooks will be given to other students who need them.

Last year, during their first 'Give Paper Back' drive, the organisation collected over 1.5 lakh notebooks from Karnataka. They generated 35,000 new books with the leftover pages and distributed them among children studying in government schools.

"Seeing last year's success, this year we are aiming to generate at least 1.5 lakh new books from Bengaluru alone," said Bhargavi Nagabhushan, the Bengaluru coordinator of Youth for Seva. For this, they would have to collect five lakh used notebooks from the city.

The initiative is driven by volunteers who collect the notebooks from apartments, schools, and offices in different parts of the city.

Bhargavi said that collecting the books was the easier part after which comes the process of segregating the used and unused pages. The used pages go to a scrap dealer and the unused ones are then sent to a press, where they are bound with a new cover.

Apart from Bengaluru, the books will be collected from many other places in the state such as Shivamogga, Hassan, Mysuru, Sirsi, Davangere, and Tumakuru.
