Row, row, row your eco-friendly boats in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Commissioner Maheshwar Rao on Saturday directed officials to coordinate with the Tourism Department to develop lakes as public attractions while preserving their ecological balance.

“Diesel or fuel-based boats shall not be permitted in any lake. Only non-polluting alternatives shall be introduced, and the boating system shall be designed to ensure zero pollution and minimal disturbance to aquatic life,” Rao said.

He also directed officers to examine the feasibility of introducing ducks in lakes, as ducks are natural aerators and contribute to improving water quality. The entire responsibility of duck rearing and maintenance shall be entrusted through tendering, to ensure accountability, he added.

Rao also instructed officials to ensure that all works undertaken by corporations and allied agencies strictly align with nature-based and eco-friendly principles, promoting long-term environmental sustainability and enhanced climate resilience.

Flood mitigation

Addressing the issue of frequent flooding, Rao directed that flood-prone locations be identified, and valley-wise, appropriate nature-based flood mitigation solutions be prepared.

“Immediate precautionary measures, including desilting of stormwater drains, removal of blockages, and restoration of natural drainage systems, shall be taken up on priority,” he said.

The concerned departments were also instructed to prepare a short-term flood mitigation plan, detailing works that can be completed within the next four months, with a focus on critical and vulnerable locations to minimise flood impact during the monsoon.
