Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) personnel stumbled upon a human skeleton while desilting a drain in Kamakshipalya limits of West Bengaluru on Monday.

The discovery baffled the engineers at the spot who alerted the jurisdictional police. Several passersby and curious onlookers gathered at the spot to take a look at the frame.

The samples were sent for forensic examination.

Sources in the BBMP told DH that the personnel were cleaning the shoulder drain by removing slab stones.

“The workers were removing the stone in front of HVR convention hall, located 50 metres from the Kamakshipalya traffic police station. The drain was filled with stones and silt. Following complaints, we were in the process of desilting it. The drain was untouched for almost four years,” a BBMP official said.

The Vijayanagar police have registered a case. Sources in the police said that as per preliminary investigation, the skeleton — which is intact — appears to be of an adult male.

Sanjeev M Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), said, “We have sent the skeletal samples along with the mud to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to ascertain the age and possible cause of death.”

“The body may have been dumped in the drain by somebody at the time of its construction, or it could have landed in the drain after being washed away in heavy rains. We are investigating in all possible directions,” said a police officer.

The episode bears some semblance to the recent Kannada movie ‘Kavaludaari’, where traffic police unearth such frames during a road construction work.
