As many as 500 encroachments have been removed from stormwater drains in the city so far while 2,000 more are still being identified by the survey department, the BBMP told the high court.

A division bench of acting Chief Justice L Narayana Swamy and Justice Dinesh Kumar was hearing a PIL petition filed by the Citizens' Action Group, urging the court to order the BBMP to effectively maintain and monitor the drains.

The court ordered the survey department to identify the encroachments on the SWDs and then inform the BBMP to remove them. It also sought an affidavit from the department on the identification of the encroachments. The court then directed the BBMP to file a report on the encroachments removed on the basis of the survey department's identification.

The next hearing is on June 4.
