Traffic hit towards Bengaluru airport after car goes up in flames at Hebbal flyover

Bengaluru: A car went up in flames on the Hebbal flyover in northern Bengaluru on Friday evening, severely affecting traffic movement towards the Kempegowda International Airport. No injuries were reported. 

According to the fire safety department control room, the fire was reported at 7.56 pm. A single fire tender was dispatched from the Hebbal fire station. Bengaluru Traffic Police put out an advisory on X (formerly Twitter) at 8.11 pm, notifying people about slow-moving traffic. 

A Maruti Suzuki Baleno caught fire on the extreme right lane of the road going towards the airport. The driver, whose identity was not revealed by the police, reportedly noticed smoke from the engine and jumped out of the vehicle as it burst into flames, said an officer from the Kodigehalli police station. 

"We are yet to ascertain what happened but the driver suspects it to be a technical issue. Experts will check this in detail on Saturday. The driver did not suffer any injuries,” he said. 

Traffic moving towards the airport road was affected. “We had to close two lanes of the flyover to get the fire tender to the spot and douse the flames. Vehicles moved, but slowly,” said a traffic police officer from the Hebbal station.
