BJP protest against Tipu Jayanti on Nov 9

Last Updated 07 November 2018, 20:58 IST

The Udupi district BJP unit will hold a protest opposing the State government’s move to observe Tipu jayanti, in front of the BJP’s office in city on November 9 at 4 pm, said Udupi BJP unit president Mattaru Rathnakar Hegde.

He told mediapersons here, on Wednesday, that the government does not have the ‘strength’ to observe Tipu Jayanthi in public. “Instead, Tipu Jayanti is being organised within the four walls of a building. It is a tragedy that Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy is following the tradition of his predecessor in observing Tipu Jayanti.”

Hegde said, “Tipu had only expanded his territory and did not contribute anything for the welfare of the state or country. He had attacked over 8,000 temples and 1,000 churches.”

He urged the government to withdraw its decision to observe Tipu Jayanti.

Hegde said that the State government had released a list of reservation for the posts of president and vice president in Urban local bodies before the ULB polls. After the announcement of the results, the government has now released a new reservation list for the posts of president and vice president to come to power in 40 ULBs.

The court, staying the move of the State government, had directed it to conduct the election for the aforementioned posts as per the previous reservation lists.

However, the district administration has not taken a final decision on the same. As a result, the development works in ULBs have come to a standstill, he said.

Hegde urged the district administration to announce the dates for the election to the posts of president and vice presidents in ULBs.

The victory of B Y Raghavendra in the Shimoga Lok Sabha constituency byelection has proved that Byndoor (which is a part of the constituency) is a BJP bastion. The BJP will win atleast 20 to 25 seats in the Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka, he added.

Row over sand

Hegde said that MLA Raghupathy Bhat had met Central government officials and had discussed the row over sand extraction in CRZ areas. The problem is likely to be solved and all those 172 permit holders are likely to get permits for extraction of sand. “If we failed to get permission from the Centre, we will hold dharna once again,” he said.
