Congress seeks complete farm loan waiver

Last Updated 13 July 2017, 17:58 IST
The members of District Congress Committee staged a demonstration in front of the lead bank in the city seeking complete waiver of farm loan borrowed from commercial and nationalised banks.

DCC president K Chandrareddy said, “The state government has waived farm loan borrowed from cooperative societies. The Union government should waive the loan taken from commercial and nationalised banks.”

He said crops, worth crores of rupees, have been lost due to perennial drought in the state. The farmers, who have borrowed loan from banks, are facing financial difficulties. Also, the lack of rain has hit them hard. Despite all this, the Union government has not yet made up its mind to waive their loan, he charged.

Chandrareddy said farmers are not getting good price for their produce and they are not in a position to repay the loan borrowed from commercial and nationalised banks. The banks will auction their land, house and jewels if they do not repay the loan. As a result, the farmers are increasingly committing suicide. The bank officers are responsible for this situation, he claimed.

He said the bank officers are harassing farmers by sending notices to farmers. The Reserve Bank of India should intervene and ask them to stop loan recovery, he said.

The BJP leaders were earlier urging chief minister to waive farm loan here. The government has waived it. Now, they should prevail upon the Union government to waive the farm loan, he said and warned that they will lay siege to nationalised banks if their demand is not wait. Congress Kisan Kheth district president Anjinappa, Youth Congress secretaries Rakesh, Nagabhushan Reddy, members Ashok Kumar, Manjunath, Y Shivakumar and Manjula took part in the demonstration.
