<p>In a bid to rein in autorickshaw operators, the district administration has made it mandatory to equip the vehicles with meters and put up driver display boards to enable the passengers with general information on the man in driver’s seat.<br />Presiding over the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) meeting held on Friday, Deputy Commissioner G Sathyavathi, also the chairman of RTA, directed the regional transport officer (RTO) to take measures in this regard.<br />Recalling the complaints of senior citizens, the deputy commissioner said the board in the rear side of the driver’s seat facing the passengers should consist of driver’s name along with his photograph, licence details, registration number and other details for the benefit of passengers.<br /><br />In the case of 93 applications received seeking permission again for the permits revoked earlier, the deputy commissioner directed RTO to issue permits after imposing a fine of Rs 500 per year beginning from the date of expiry.<br /><br />Following a complaint from the autorickshaw drivers who were lured by autorickshaw dealers promising to facilitate permits, she warned of closing down such agencies who have been misleading the transport operators.<br /><br />She also told the meeting that the permits will be issued to new three-wheelers only after seeking opinions from the RTO, the PWD and also the police department, depending on the length of the roads and also population.<br /><br />SP K Annamalai brought it to the notice of the DC that autorickshaws run on the permits transferred from Ballari and Hassan districts. <br /><br />The automobile agencies which have been dealing with such other district vehicles should furnish related information, he added.<br /><br />The DC sought a joint survey report from department of transport and the RTO on revising bus routes, granting permits for additional routes and also revise the timings. <br />On long chassis buses being operated to Bababudangiri and other tourist spots in the vicinity, posing danger, the deputy commissioner said only those buses with 35-seats including driver and wheel, width of 150 inches, will be allowed henceforth. <br /><br />In the case of otherwise, it is difficult for the drivers to manoeuvre, she said.<br />Sathyavathi also warned of recommending the government to initiate action against officials who fail to convene RTA meeting once in every two months.<br /><br />RTO K R Shashikala and divisional controller Anil Kumar were present.<br /><br /><br /></p>
