<p>The State government will construct 20,000 houses under various schemes in Hassan district in current year, said Housing and District In-charge Minister V Somanna on Monday.<br /><br />He directed the executive officers of all taluk panchayats to prepare the list of beneficiaries and submit the same to the deputy commissioner before February 16. Those who failed to adhere to the orders would be suspended from the duty, he added.<br /><br />At a news conference here, the minister said the government was committed to make the district free from huts as nearly 49,000 people are still living in huts. The money would be directly credited to the bank accounts of beneficiaries to build the houses. The purpose of this was to check the misuse of funds by middlemen.<br /><br />Somanna said out of the 47,000 houses planned, already 14,000 houses had been distributed and the rest would be given to the respective beneficiaries before March.<br /><br />Rs. 50 cr for scheme<br /><br />He said the government has introduced Bhagya Sampada Yashaswini (BSY) housing scheme under which one lakh houses will be constructed for urban poor in and around Bangalore from the current financial year. The Chief Minister, B S Yeddyurappa released ` 50 crore for this scheme. Each house will be one or double bed room. The houses would be distributed to poor and houseless families. The cost of each house is ` three lakh. <br /><br />Interest free loan would be made available to the beneficiaries from banks payable within ten years. The government is planning to extend this scheme to Hassan city next year. Instructions are given to the deputy commissioner to identify land in the city for this purpose. Out of the total 2,227 slums in the State of which Bangalore has more than 500 slums. Houses would be constructed under the Ashraya scheme, he added.<br /><br />New building <br /><br />Somanna said a new building is planned for the DC’s office in the city on the lines of Gadag where all the government departments are located under single roof. The DC has been asked to look for around 15 acre land for this purpose.<br /><br />On land row at S M Krishna nagar in Hassan, the minister promised to sort out the matter at the earliest. This kind of problems is common in Bangalore. The management of St Philomena’s Educational Institution would be requested to allow for widening works from N R circle to New Bus Stand.<br /><br />Village stay<br /><br />The district in-charge minister promised to begin his village stay from Arehalli village of the district. This kind of programmes would help to solve the problems of villagers at the doorstep.</p>
