Karnataka govt to file defamation suit against BJP for spreading false information

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government decided to initiate a defamation lawsuit against the Opposition BJP, accusing the party of spreading false information, distortions and misleading facts about its performance in both visual and print media. 

The Home Department issued an official notification regarding this on Sunday.

The Home Department directed the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) secretary to file the case in Bengaluru’s 42nd Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court.

"To handle the legal proceedings, government advocates B S Patil from the 67th City Civil and Sessions Court and Shailaja Nayak from the 61st City Civil and Sessions Court have been appointed," the notification read.

To ensure smooth coordination, the Home Department’s Additional Secretary (Law and Order), Kumta Prakash, has been assigned the responsibility of compiling all relevant documents and information from the departments concerned for the government’s legal team.

The decision to pursue legal action comes in response to the BJP’s campaign marking the completion of two years of the state government. The BJP’s campaign has angered the government for incorporating “incorrect, distorted, and false facts” intended to defame the administration.
