<p>Kalaburagi: The state government has announced Rs 667.73 crore compensation package to over 2.36 lakh farmers who have lost various crops, especially tur due to the erratic rainfall and moisture deficiency.</p><p>In a press release, District In-charge Minister Priyank Kharge claimed that this is the largest ever compensation amount provided to farmers in the district. He also stated that this includes both crop insurance claims and compensation for crop damage.</p><p>Out of the total compensation, Rs 575.19 crore will be distributed to 2,04,073 farmers who enrolled under the crop insurance scheme during the 2024-25 monsoon season. Additionally, 2,01,847 farmers have already received an interim relief of Rs 76.34 crore for damages caused by natural calamities. The rest of the amount will be disbursed to those affected by crop damage in the district. It will benefit farmers engaged in cultivation of various other crops, including chickpea, groundnut, pigeon pea, soybean, and cotton, he explained.</p><p><strong>Data collection process</strong></p><p>Pointing out that the data collection process on the disaster portal is currently underway and farmers will soon receive their compensation directly into their bank accounts, he said that the government has distributed Rs 108.30 crore to 9,189 farmers through the purchase of tur crop on support price of Rs 8,000 per quintal.</p><p>The government has provided relief under the National and State Drought Relief Fund. A total of Rs 13.47 crore has been allocated to 35,086 farmers as part of this compensation in response to the severe weather conditions in August and September 2024, which caused significant crop damage over an area of 16,373 hectares, he said.</p><p>“Our government’s effort to provide financial relief will go a long way in helping farmers recover from the losses they have faced. We are committed to the welfare of our farmers and will continue to work towards their betterment. This relief package is expected to bring significant relief to the farming community in Kalaburagi and help stabilise the agricultural sector, ensuring a brighter future for the district’s farmers”, he asserted.</p><p>Various farmer leaders had held a unique protest by carrying rottis in bullock carts and eating them in front of the deputy commissioner’s office, demanding the announcement of a special package for the damage to tur crop. They had blocked the road between Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Circle and Annapurna Cross for three days. Tur Growers’ Association president Basavaraj Ingin and other farmer leaders had alleged that the government has been meting out a step-motherly treatment to tur farmers though more than 30% of the crop has been lost in the district.</p>
