Khandre bats for large-scale cultivation of bamboo in urban areas

Bengaluru: Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment Eshwar B Khandre has advocated large-scale cultivation of bamboo in urban areas to offset the adverse effects of carbon emissions. 

Speaking at the inauguration of India’s first bamboo gallery in the city on Friday, Khandre pointed to bamboo’s inherent ability to absorb large quantities of carbon dioxide and release oxygen. 

Describing bamboo as a ‘unique treasure of the forest’, Khandre underscored its diverse applications and ecological benefits. He noted that bamboo, although a type of grass, is an essential part of the forest ecosystem and a key food source for elephants. 

“Growing bamboo extensively in forest areas can act as a natural barricade, helping manage movement of wild animals, and reduce conflicts between humans and animals,” the minister added.

He also highlighted the inseparable bond between bamboo and humans. “The winnows used for grain-picking and gifting, the baskets for storing daily necessities like rice, the cradle used for children, and the household ladder were all made of bamboo. Now, they have got a modern touch,” he said.

Khandre toured the gallery and admired the furniture, tables, and even bicycles made from bamboo. He also took the bamboo bicycle for a joy ride. 

Retired IFS officer and chairman of the Bamboo Society of India Punati Sridhar was present.
