<p>The runner of the turbine in one of the two units of the Linganamakki powerhouse in Sagar taluk of the district, one of the major hydropower plants in the state, is all set for replacement, for the first time since its inception in 1980.</p>.<p>Sources in Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) told <em>DH</em> that the runner which had been installed in the powerhouse 45 years ago stopped functioning 10 months ago.</p>.<p>Ramesh, chief engineer of the electricity department of KPCL, told <em>DH</em> that it was not routine maintenance work.</p>.<p>Without replacing the runner, power can’t be generated from the unit. So, over the last 10 months, only one unit of the Linganamakki powerhouse has been functioning.</p>.Ordinance to curb MFI 'harassment' likely before Karnataka Cabinet on Friday.<p class="bodytext">The total power generation capacity of the powerhouse is 55 MW (27.5 MW from each unit). </p>.<p class="bodytext">KPCL wants to have all its hydel units in the Sharavathi valley, including the Sharavathi generating station (SGS), Mahatma Gandhi and Linganamakki powerhouses, up and running by summer, when the demand for electricity peaks. </p>.<p class="bodytext">The estimated cost of the device is Rs 10 crore and KPCL’s design department which offers engineering, design, and procurement services for power projects has floated the tender for the replacement of the runner at the Linganamakki powerhouse.</p>.<p class="bodytext">The whole process is expected to be completed in six months after the issuance of the work order once the tender process is over.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Ramesh said the Linganamakki dam had reached maximum water level during this financial year due to good rains in the catchment area. So, there is no dearth of water for power generation.</p>.<p class="bodytext">Since April last year, SGS generated 3,900 million units of power till January. It has generated 17 million to 18 million units per day.</p>
