M K Ganapathi case: Karnataka Cabinet rejects panel recommendation

Bengaluru: The Cabinet on Thursday rejected Justice K N Keshavanarayana Commission’s recommendations on initiating action against officers in connection with the 2016 suicide of Deputy Superintendent of Police M K Ganapathi.

In July 2016, Ganapathi died by suicide after accusing then home minister K J George, IPS officers AM Prasad and Pranab Mohanty for his situation. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who was at the helm then, too, formed the one-man inquiry commission, which gave its report in February 2018. 

The commission exonerated George, Prasad and Mohanty. However, it recommended action against a few officials citing lapses during investigation.

To study the commission’s report, the government had appointed retired DGP M K Srivastava. He gave his report in May 2025. Srivastava opined that there was no need for action against officials given that the CBI’s closure report (it gave a clean chit to George, Prasad and Mohanty) had been upheld by the Karnataka High Court and the Supreme Court.
