A man has been arrested for the murder of his younger brother by police in Karkala on Sunday.

The arrested is identified as Melvin Santhosh D’Souza.

Sources in Karkala Town police said that Melvin had murdered his younger brother, Avil D’souza (24) after the latter attacked him following an altercation in March 2018.

The arrested has been remanded in judicial custody.

It is said that Avil often fought with his parents and his elder brother.

On March 30, when Avil was engaged in a heated argument with his aged father, Melvin intervened and tried to stop the fight. However, Avil in a fit of rage attacked his elder brother. In self defence, Melvin assaulted his younger brother, who died on the spot.

Later, he took the body and burnt it near a pond. However, the parents were not aware on the death of Avil.

Albert D’Souza, father of the brothers, had filed a missing complaint in April 2018.

The police, who took up investigation, detained Melvin on suspicion. During the interrogation, Melvin confessed to the crime. The accused and deceased were in an inebriated condition when the crime took place, sources in police said.
