<p>Mangaluru: The Government Lady Goschen Hospital successfully performed surgery on a pregnant woman with life-threatening Hemophilia, thus saving both mother and child.</p><p>The woman, who inherited the rare blood disorder Hemophilia (Von Willebrand disease (VWD) by birth, had been receiving treatment from private hospitals since childhood. However, pregnancy with Von Willebrand's disease carries the constant risk of internal bleeding, which can lead to maternal death at any time. The condition is primarily caused by a deficiency of Factor VIII, a protein essential for blood clotting. The treatment involves continuous administration of the specific Factor VIII in synthetic form.</p><p>Unfortunately, this rare condition, affecting only one in a lakh, is extremely challenging and expensive to treat. The injections, processed from plasma and available only in limited supply, are expensive. With care at Lady Goschen Hospital, she was admitted 20 days before her expected delivery date. After ensuring a reliable supply of Factor VIII injections and completing all preparations, caesarean delivery was successfully performed at the hospital.</p><p>Expert doctors from KMC and Lady Goschen, including obstetricians and gynecologists Dr Anupama Rao, Dr Siriganesh, Dr Namita, as well as anesthetists Dr Sumesh Rao and Dr Ranjan, along with the dedicated nursing team, played an important role in the treatment and C- section of the woman. In fact, the government had provided the woman with the costly injection—valued in lakhs of rupees (25,000 units in total)—entirely free of cost during her pregnancy.</p><p>After around 10 days of postnatal care at the hospital, the woman was discharged from the hospital.
