The government has allocated Rs 14,094 crore to the energy sector to boost power generation and to light up rural areas of Karnataka.

With an eye on elections, the government has increased the power consumption under Bhagya Jyothi Scheme — free electricity supply — to 40 units from 18 units. For the first time, the department has planned to create model electricity villages across the state. “We have asked the MLAs of all constituencies to submit a list of five villages in their constituencies. These villages will be provided streetlights and electricity supply on a par with urban areas ” said Energy minister D K Shivakumar.
