'Poor get trapped in debts to meet the medical expenses'

BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has stressed the need for implementing preventive health missions to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi in 2018 and 75 years of Indian Independence in 2022.

He was speaking at the valedictory of the golden jubilee celebrations of KLE University’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College at the district stadium here on Thursday. Modi said that preventive measures were better than cure. Mahatma Gandhi used to propagate cleanliness practised at his Sabarmati Ashram wherever he visited.

With the increase in the number of diseases and the patients suffering from them, there was a shortage of doctors and paramedical staff. Human resources in health sector have to be developed, Modi said.

The country lagged behind in research in medical sciences, he said. Modi regretted that the poor get trapped in debts to meet the medical expenses when their family members become ill. There was a need to develop systems to face such situations, he added.

Preventive measures could rid people of many diseases and clean drinking water could resolve a number of problems, the Gujarat chief minister said.

KLE Society chairman and KLE University chancellor Prabhakar Kore and others were present.
